When phlegm (mucus) is in the breathing tubes (airways) it will cause a cough.
The breathing tubes get damaged when the phlegm gets infected (by bacteria).

Damaged airways can cause even more phlegm.

Sometimes it is hard to get rid of the phlegm and children cough a lot.
