Points to Remember

  • PEP is a technique that applies resistance to the breath out, causing a build-up of air in the lungs and airways which creates positive pressure.
  • There are many different types of PEP and each PEP routine will look slightly different.
  • Most routines include the following: a slightly larger than normal breath in and a long, active breath out, for at least 4 seconds.
  • Ventolin and mucolytics usually come before PEP, inhaled antibiotics after PEP.
  • PEP devices should be cleaned after each session.
